Dear Blair…

Postcards from Magical Places (3 Stars)

Design the front and back of a postcard that might be sent from the location of a movie or a work of fiction. Both sides of the cards must be created as graphics.

The fornt should use graphic design elements that provide a sense of place or use the classic motifs of old postcards (“Greetings from ______”)_, both pictures and text. The back of the post card should contain a stamp and postmark that fits with the theme of the movie, as well as an addressee and a message that fits the plot as well.

The inspiration was a fanfiction assignment created by a UMW student in Spring Semester 2011- see the excellent set of LOTR cards at http://cupofchai.umwblogs.org/2010/11/22/fanfiction/

Story Behind the Story

Once again, Blair and Stella collaborated. This time they sent postcards to each other (here is Blair’s letter). Stella traveled to Los Angeles to find more candidates for the radio show Noir Not the Father. She finally met with a man and, according to her, “accidentally” informed him that his wife had been cheating on him. The couple had been living a perfectly normal and ignorant life, but Stella was not about to let that continue. She picked a random city and chose one random person to follow around until some secret revealed themselves.

The coffee stain is a representation of Stella informing the man that his wife had been cheating on him. He through a hissy hit in the middle of the coffee shop, resulting in coffee being spilled on Stella’s nicely written note and a couple hundred dollars worth of property damage. All in all it was a pretty successful meet and greet. She convinced him to come on the show. It also wouldn’t be a noir postcard without a hint at a secret plan within the text. Blair and Stella hint at a shipment, but we do not know what it is? And I don’t know if you ever will…until it is too late.

Narrate the Process

I used a template for the postcard and then used GIMP effects to make the LA picture into a canvas. I also found the coffee stain within GIMP functions. I used this assignment to explore all of the different features and effects that come with GIMP.
