DS106 Radio Commercial (3 stars)
Create a commercial featuring an item that you have invented that would be extremely useful to your favorite movie or TV Show character. Try to be as creative and abstract as possible. Must include sound effects or background music and be at least 20 seconds in length.
Story Behind the Story
I deviated a little from the instructions for this assignment. My group decided to have a couple of our commercials reflect some of the characters in our radio show. Since three of the characters are alcoholics, we thought it seemed fitting to have an alcoholics anonymous commercial. It was kind of like a PSA — “if you are struggling with the same problems as these characters, here is how you deal with it.”
It was a lot of fun to make. I had my roommate help me with a second voice and we both determined that we missed our calling as actors. Those three lines really showcased our dramatic side.
It did take a little time to figure out exactly what kind of tone or theme an alcoholics anonymous commercial would entail. I looked up some slogans and a couple motivational commercials to get a feel for what exactly it should sound like. Because we have been so focused on noir these past couple of weeks I couldn’t not put in a dramatic scene at the beginning with some crashes and static. It just didn’t feel right.
Narrate the Process
I kept thinking of visuals for this commercial and then had to keep reminding myself that it was all audio. Once I was fully in that mindset, I tried to incorporate the dangers of alcoholism as well as a solution. I created a script and then practiced out loud a couple of times.
I used audacity for this, and I will say it was a lot less daunting this time around than the first. I felt like I knew what I was doing. Although it was the first time I had recorded my own voice with it, so that was a little nerve racking; however, a lot easier than editing other sounds and meshing them together.
